What Are Cutting Wheels Made Of?

Cutting wheels may appear simple, but their performance depends on the combination of abrasive grains, bonding materials, reinforcement materials, and other formulation ingredients.

Abrasive Grains

Abrasive grains are responsible for the actual cutting action. Aluminum oxide is widely used for cutting carbon steel and other ferrous metals. Zirconia-alumina and ceramic-based abrasives are chosen when faster cutting speeds, greater durability, or longer wheel life are required.

Silicon carbide is a sharp, hard abrasive commonly used for materials such as stone, masonry, cast iron, and certain non-ferrous metals. The appropriate grit size should always be selected based on the workpiece and the application.

Resin Bond

Most cutting wheels used with angle grinders are resin-bonded. The bonding material holds the abrasive grains together, allowing the wheel to maintain its shape during operation.

The bond must strike the right balance between strength and controlled wear. If the wheel is too hard, cutting speed may decrease; if it wears too quickly, the product's lifespan may be shortened.

Fiberglass Reinforcement

Fiberglass mesh is typically added to wheels to increase their strength and improve their resistance to operational forces. The number and placement of reinforcement layers vary depending on the wheel type, thickness, and intended use.

Additives and Fillers

Other materials may be added to enhance cutting performance, control heat, increase wheel strength, and improve manufacturing consistency. The complete formulation must be tailored to the target material, machine speed, and desired product positioning.

Why Material Selection Matters

Two cutting wheels of the same size can perform differently due to variations in grain quality, formulation, reinforcement materials, and manufacturing processes. Therefore, when selecting a cutting wheel, buyers should consider factors beyond just size and price-such as the workpiece type, application scenario, maximum operating speed, and expected cutting performance.
